International judo comes to Medway

Medway is preparing to welcome another major event to its new centre of sporting excellence.

One of the largest events in the judo calendar, the Kent International Open competition, will be moving to Medway Park from 2010.

The event, currently staged at Crystal Palace, attracts almost 1,000 competitors from across the UK and Northern Europe and was originally staged at the Black Lion leisure centre until it outgrew the venue.

The action will take place in the new 12-court sports hall at Medway Park, which will be the largest hall of its kind in the region. Competitors will also able to use the centre’s new Olympic training-standard judo centre, which is home to Medway Park Judo Club.

A spokesman for the Kent Committee said: “After nearly 20 years hosting the competition at Crystal Palace we are very pleased and excited to be able to bring the Kent International back to a venue in Kent.

“It is even more fitting that we can return to Medway Park, as this was where the competition was first hosted.”

The competition will take place on 26 and 27 June 2010, following hot on the heels of the Modern Pentathlon World Cup, when Olympic and world medallists will join competitors from around 40 nations for what is the first global sporting event to ever be held in Medway.

Cllr Howard Doe, Medway Council’s cabinet member for community services, said: “Medway Park is and ideal venue for the Kent International Open and we are delighted that this exciting event can finally return to Medway.

“It is a further endorsement of the calibre of facilities being created as part of the redevelopment of the Black Lion centre to create Medway Park.”

This year’s Kent International took place last weekend (26 and 27 June 2009), when the return to Medway from 2010 was announced.

In the girls 14-17 under 70kg category Chelsey Edwards of Wrenwa and Medway Park Judo Clubs won a bronze medal.
In the mens U100kg category Lee Cooper also won a bronze medal.
